Overview

Designed first, installed second: feature walls done right

A feature wall isn't 'one painted darker'. It's a design decision that has to relate to the room's proportions, light, focal point and existing trim.

We design and install feature walls across Bracknell, Wokingham, Reading and the wider Berkshire area. The work covers MDF and pine wall panelling (Shaker, board-and-batten, jacobean grid, half-height panelled), vertical slat walls in walnut, oak and painted MDF, fluted feature panels, colour-blocked accent walls, statement wallpaper backdrops, and integrated picture-rail and dado detailing.

Most clients want to add architectural character to a room that was finished as a blank box, typically a new-build bedroom, an open-plan dining area, or a hallway that lacks definition. Others come to us to design around a focal point like a fireplace, an awkward chimney breast, or a media wall.

Done well, a feature wall changes how the whole room feels, adding hierarchy, shadow, and a place for the eye to land. Done badly, it looks like a stuck-on afterthought. The difference is almost always in the setting-out: panel proportions, batten spacing, and how the feature relates to the room's existing skirting, dado and ceiling lines.

Don't ignore this

Where DIY and budget feature walls go wrong

Feature walls are one of the most-attempted DIY projects, and one of the most commonly redone. Here's why.

Panel proportions feel wrong

Panels sized off a YouTube tutorial don't relate to your room. They look small in a tall room, crowded in a short one, and they fight with the existing skirting and architrave heights.

Battens that aren't straight

MDF battens fixed to a wall that isn't flat read every bow and bulge. Without packing and shimming, the finished feature looks waved and amateur.

Visible nail holes and joins

Pinned panels finished without filler, caulk and a final sand show every fixing in raking light. Once paint goes on, the holes are immortalised.

Statement wallpaper hung off-centre

Large-pattern statement wallpapers must be centred on the focal point of the wall, not started from one corner. Off-centre installations destroy the entire feature's impact.

Our Process

A clear sequence,no guesswork, no chaos.

  1. 01

    Design consultation

Site visit, room photographed and measured, focal points identified. Two or three design options drawn up: panel proportions, batten spacings, material and finish recommendations.

  2. 02

    Wall preparation

Existing wall taken back to a sound, flat surface, filling, sanding, and lining where needed. Datum lines marked with a laser.

  3. 03

    Setting out & dry-fit

Panels and battens marked out to the agreed design, with dry-fits to confirm proportion and corner relationships before any fixings go in.

  4. 04

    Fixing, filling & caulking

Panels glued and pinned, nail holes filled, joints and edges caulked, and the whole feature sanded smooth before paint.

  5. 05

    Decoration & walk-through

Feature primed and finished in your chosen colour and sheen. Edges cut in by hand. Walk-through to confirm proportions and finish before sign-off.

Benefits

What you actually get,not vague promises.

Designed for your room

Panel sizes and proportions calculated for your ceiling height, wall width and existing trim, not copied from a template.

Crisp, furniture-grade finish

Filled, caulked and denibbed between coats so the finished feature reads as cabinetry, not site-built carpentry.

Adds architecture to plain rooms

Particularly effective in new-build extensions, plain bedroom walls, hallways without natural focal points, and open-plan dining spaces.

Pattern centred properly

Statement wallpaper hung from the central plumb line so the pattern resolves at the focal point of the room.

Lighting-aware design

Feature walls designed knowing where wall lights, picture lights, downlights and natural daylight fall: so shadow detail reads correctly.

Co-ordinated with adjacent decoration

Skirting, architrave, ceiling and adjacent wall colours specified to support the feature, not compete with it.

In Depth

The detail behindthe finished result.

Feature wall styles we install

Shaker panelling: clean rectangular MDF panels with mitred trim, typically painted to match the wall colour with a slight sheen contrast.

Board-and-batten: simple vertical battens on a flat MDF base, evenly spaced and capped with a top rail. Looks particularly good in bedrooms and hallways.

Jacobean / box grid: more ornate full-height grid panelling with vertical and horizontal members. Suits living rooms with high ceilings.

Vertical slat walls: solid timber or painted MDF slats fixed proud of the wall with even spacing. Modern, sculptural, very effective behind beds and TV walls.

Fluted panels: pre-machined MDF fluted boards in a vertical or horizontal run: quick to install, contemporary, popular in dining rooms.

Wallpaper feature walls: a single dramatic wall in a large-pattern paper, centred properly on the room's focal point, with the surrounding walls in a sympathetic colour.

Materials and finishes

Standard work uses moisture-resistant MDF for panels and primed pine for trim, finished in three coats of water-based eggshell for a smooth, fingerprint-resistant surface. Where a timber-grain finish is wanted we use solid oak or walnut slats with a hardwax-oil finish.

Where feature walls work best

Behind a bed in a master bedroom (full-height panelling or slat wall), behind a sofa in a living room (board-and-batten or wallpaper), as a media-wall backdrop (fluted MDF or slat), in a hallway (half-height panelling), and on a chimney breast (Shaker panelling with a contrast colour).

Common Questions

Everything you needbefore we start.

How long does a feature wall take?

Most feature walls: from design to decorated finish: take three to five working days. Larger or full-height installations run a week.

Can you design the feature for me?

Yes, design consultation is included in every quote. We'll measure, photograph the room, propose two or three options, and walk through proportions with you before committing to fabrication.

What does it cost?

MDF Shaker panelling on a standard bedroom feature wall is typically £600–£1,200 finished. Slat walls and bespoke designs vary with size and material. Fixed written quote within 24 hours of survey.

Will the existing skirting and architrave still work?

Almost always yes, we design around them, integrating the feature with your existing trim profiles. Where the trim is wrong for the feature we'll discuss replacement honestly.

Do you do half-height (hallway-style) panelling?

Yes, half-height panelling is one of our most popular feature installations, particularly in hallways and dining rooms.

Can you hang statement wallpaper as the feature?

Yes, large-pattern statement wallpapers are properly centred on the focal point and combined with sympathetic adjacent wall colours.

Will the feature damage the existing wall?

No, pinned and glued installation can be removed cleanly. A small amount of filling will be needed if the feature is ever removed; the underlying wall isn't permanently altered.

Will it work in a small room?

Yes, proportion is the key. Smaller features and lighter detail in smaller rooms; full-height schemes in larger ones.

What guarantee do you offer?

Five years' workmanship, covering fixings, joints and decorative finish.
